The Power of Mentorship in Breaking Cycles of Poverty & Crime
Shreveport’s crime crisis isn’t just about law enforcement—it’s about lost opportunities, broken families, and young men without direction.
At SCU, we believe mentorship is one of the most powerful tools for change. By pairing at-risk youth with trusted mentors, we’re giving them the guidance, structure, and opportunities they need to rewrite their futures.
Why Mentorship Matters
🔹 70% of violent crime in Shreveport is committed by youth between the ages of 12-17.
🔹 Many of these young men come from unstable homes, with no positive role models.
🔹 Without intervention, they either end up in prison—or worse.
But when these young men are given a mentor, a purpose, and a plan, their entire outlook shifts.
“I was lost—drifting, angry, and ready to give up. My mentor showed me another way.” – SCU Program Participant
